Douglas County is home to approximately 575,000 residents with just over 1 million people in the greater Omaha area. Omaha, the largest city in the County, often appears on the Best Cities list for its high quality of life and low cost of living. The County contains five major health systems including two pediatric hospitals and two Federally Qualified Health Centers. The Healthcare infrastructure is robust and is one of a handful of communities boasting two medical schools, two dental schools, five nursing colleges, and the largest of the CDC’s Biocontainment Units in the United States. The Nebraska Biocontainment Unit provides first line treatment of people affected by bioterrorism or highly hazardous communicable diseases.

The Public Health Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership, oversite, and administration of the Health Department.  The selected candidate would join an established, thriving organization supporting community stakeholders and committed to racial equity and justice. This includes directing a high-performance organization with a $15 million budget and a regular staff of 130.

The position requires a doctoral degree in Public Health or in Medicine or Community Nursing with a Master’s degree in Public Health AND a minimum of ten years’ experience in a large public health agency. Five years of senior management experience is preferred. The new Director must be a strong, racially conscious leader demonstrating political savvy, flexibility, and adaptability.
