Chair of Anesthesiology and Director of the Anesthesiology Service Line
USA Health recently engaged WittKieffer to assist in a national search for an inaugural Department Chair of Anesthesiology and Director of the Anesthesiology Service Line. This will be an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial anesthesiology leader to join USA Health which currently has a distinguished and productive faculty with high quality clinical and educational programs.
USA Health is this region’s only academic health system, with a three-part commitment to providing excellent clinical care, educating the next generation of physicians and other care providers, and research. USA Health is comprised of USA Health University Hospital, USA Health Physicians Group, USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute, and USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital, which is a free-standing entity devoted solely to the care of women, infants and children. USA Health is an essential safety-net healthcare organization for the region with services that include: the Region’s only Level I trauma center, the Arnold Luterman Regional Burn Center, the Level III Hollis Wiseman Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Arlene Mitchell Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a comprehensive stroke center, and services in the treatment and care of people with digestive disorders. USA Health serves the population in an area of about 200 miles around Mobile.
The institution looks to evolve existing anesthesiology services at the various facilities into a comprehensive system-wide service line and academic department of anesthesiology.USA Health has committed a significant investment in anesthesiology services which will support recruitment of faculty members, directly addressing the critical issue of scale, expanding the clinical footprint of the organization, and optimization of clinical resources. The intent will be to evolve the current core anesthesiology services into the foundation of the newly formed Department. Thus, this is an exciting time for the College of Medicine of the University of South Alabama and for the healthcare system that surrounds it. The objective to launch an anesthesiology residency training program will feature prominently with full support of the College’s senior leadership. Importantly, the institution has had continuous accreditation with the ACGME since its founding.
The new leader will be expected to create a strategic plan that leads to a robust clinical enterprise which fosters growth and stabilization within the work environment and focuses forward on program building for medical training and research, taking advantage of the many resources in the clinical environment. USA Health’s strategic plan identifies surgery and several surgical subspecialties as vital clinical service lines, and the Chair will be one of the key leaders in the implementation of the many programs that fall under the umbrella of anesthesiology and related services within this enterprise.
The Chair will bring a track record of success in establishing patient-centered multidisciplinary clinical services for both in- and out-patient settings, building relationships with community-based institutions and providers, having a broad-based experience in financial management of a clinical enterprise, and building a competitive training program. Recruitment and retention of faculty plus mentoring and career development of junior faculty are critically important components of the position. Importantly, the Chair must be viewed by all stakeholders as a willing collaborator with colleagues outside of the Department.
Qualified candidates must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree; be board certified in anesthesiology and eligible for medical licensure in Alabama; and meet USA criteria for appointment to a senior level faculty position. Proven and substantial leadership experience particularly in program-building is required, as is the ability to be a collaborative leader in a rapidly evolving model of care and in a workplace that actively embraces the importance of diversity and inclusion. The candidate must have the political acumen, powers of persuasion and authentic personal leadership style necessary to advance the USA Healthcare Network and its anesthesiology services and inspire its faculty and students. Applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged.
