The Division of Neonatology at Duke University School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking early or mid-career faculty, at the medical instructor, assistant, or associate professor level to lead our antenatal consultation and Neonatal palliative care service. Ideal candidates are graduating neonatology fellows, early or mid-career neonatologists with a strong interest in the fields of antenatal consultation and palliative care in the neonatal intensive care population.  Candidates must be board-certified or eligible in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Our nationally recognized program links strongly with high-risk obstetrics and the Duke pediatric quality of life/palliative care services, as well as with multiple pediatric subspecialties at Duke. Training, skills and experience in hospice and palliative medicine, communication and/or clinical medical ethics will greatly strengthen a candidate’s application.

Duke’s Department of Pediatrics includes over 200 faculty with primary appointments in the Department. The Division of Neonatology includes 21 faculty members and 10 fellows (9 Neonatology fellows and 1 complex care follow-up program fellow). Several faculty members hold leadership roles in the Duke Clinical Research Institute and the Department’s Division of Quantitative Sciences, which provides assistance in clinical trial design and data analysis to faculty throughout the Pediatric Department. The Division faculty include pediatricians and advanced practice providers in our Transitions Program, which includes the Special Infant Care Clinic, the Transitional Medical Home Program and the Pediatric Heart Center Neurodevelopmental Follow-up clinic, as well as an inpatient service providing care for infants with complex needs for the transition to home.

The Neonatology faculty currently provides complex care at two sites: the 67-bed level IV intensive care unit at Duke Hospital and an 18-bed Level II unit at Duke Regional Hospital. In the past few years we have admitted approximately 1,000 babies to the Duke NICU per year, including 20 – 30 infants born at periviable (22 – 24 weeks) gestational age. The antenatal consult service currently works with 100 – 150 families with high-risk pregnancies per year. We expect the Duke Hospital Intensive Care Nursery to increase capacity by 14 beds in the next 12 months.

The Division is a highly respected and productive member of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network (NRN). Mortality rates and rates of bronchopulmonary dysplasia continue to be among the lowest among U.S. tertiary centers. Presently the Division has over 30 sponsored or investigator-initiated clinical trials in preparation, actively enrolling, or in follow-up. In addition to clinical research, 3 of our faculty are clinician researchers with active translational and bench research in microbiome and metabolomics, neural injury and repair, and developmental immunology. Another young faculty member was recently awarded a National Palliative Care Research Center Career Development Award.
