SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Provides legal advice and services on issues concerning the rights, obligations and privileges of the organization. Represents the organization to customers, suppliers, competitors and government agencies. Provides resolution of business or technical issues by identifying legal solutions and recommending a course of action. Examines legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuits.
This specific Senior Counsel position will support the Research function within the institution.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide Legal Advice and Counsel - Provide legal advice and counsel within designated areas to institutional leaders, and maintain competency within designated areas and familiarity with legal trends and developments in healthcare and healthcare related fields.
Provide Legal Review - Provide legal review for policies and procedures within designated areas as required, provide advice and review of transactions and relationships, and negotiating, drafting, reviewing and approving contracts and agreements within designated areas, as appropriate.
Provide Training - Assist with the development of training programs and providing training for administrators, faculty, and staff relating to designated areas.
Strategic Management - Collaborate with departmental and organizational leadership on long-term and short-term planning. Supports the strategic priorities through targeted, innovative and responsive solutions. Serves as an organizational advocate and partner with business leaders. Acts together with management as a champion for positive organizational culture and quality of work life as it relates to Labor Law or similar institutional imperatives or initiatives.
Staff, Budget or Outside Counsel Management - Responsible for supervising reporting staff and completion of yearly evaluations, responsible for managing budgets, litigation matters or outside counsel relationship.
Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required:
Juris Doctor
5+ years of work experience practicing law.
Maintain licensure to practice law in the State of Ohio
Preferred:
Expertise in the area of specialty: research, contracting and compliance law
Large law firm experience
Previous experience with academic medical centers, and/or in-house legal departments, including supervisory experience is preferred
