The Permanente Medical Group and Kaiser Permanente are looking for an experienced research leader to lead the internationally recognized Division of Research within Kaiser Permanente, Northern California. You will lead a vibrant 63-year-old research center of over 700 research professionals, including 67 faculty-level investigators, within a learning health care system focused on solving critical care delivery issues and improving health care outcomes for both the 4.6 million members of Kaiser Permanente Northern California and for the public on local, national, and international levels.
The Director provides the Division of Research’s overall scientific and administrative leadership and vision and works with other executives for planning, supporting, and executing this vision.
Responsibilities include:
Sustaining, nurturing, and expanding an internationally recognized center of excellence in discovery & health research based in Kaiser Permanente Northern California.
Mentoring the investigator community and attracting and retaining top caliber scientists.
Setting the strategic research direction of the Division of Research, strengthening relationships with key funding partners, including federal agencies.
Working with the Medical Group and Kaiser Permanente leadership to develop, communicate, and disseminate research results within and outside the organization and with the TPMG Chief Research Officer, Chief Executive Officer, Associate Executive Directors, and other system-level leadership for enterprise-level research initiatives within a Learning Health System setting.
Developing and overseeing the Division’s operations and annual departmental budget; assuring the scientific integrity of research; overseeing the Division’s leadership team that includes 6 associate directors for specific research topic areas, a managing director (administrative lead); and administrative directors for information technology, strategic programming, and clinical trials.
An ongoing personal agenda of externally funded scholarly research is strongly encouraged.
Basic Qualifications:
Advanced degree (PhD, MD, or other professional degree in human behavior, medicine, health services, pharmacy, behavioral science, health policy, or a related field.)
A minimum of seven (7) years of research experience involving human subjects in such areas as health services research, translational research, program evaluation, epidemiology, preventive services, health policy, clinical trials, and/or other related research areas.
A minimum of three (3) years of experience in management and leadership positions(s) that can include administration, budget oversight, human resources management, liaison activities, and strategic leadership.
A substantial record of funded scientific research, publications, and national stature in the research community.
Knowledge of, or experience within, managed care and health care settings is beneficial although not required.
The Division of Research has a >$133 million annual portfolio of federal, state, industry, and institutionally funded research in epidemiology, delivery science, clinical trials, social and health-related disparities, patient-centered outcomes, and other topics. It is the primary research home for >67 full-time MD or PhD scientists, 45 adjunct faculty, and more than 650 additional research professionals, including data analysts, project managers, research associates, and others. Most of the budget is from federal funding agencies (NIH, NCI, AHRQ, CDC, FDA, PCORI, etc.). The Division manages a research clinic for clinical examination and biospecimen collection to support cohort studies, case-control studies, and clinical trials; data for a collaborative genomics research program with >400,000 DNA specimens; and archived pathology specimens on all health plan patients. The Division collaborates closely with multiple KP residency and fellowship programs within KPNC and has extensive, dedicated information technology and strategic programming infrastructure for data-centered and artificial intelligence research.
The Division and its investigators partner closely with many national and international institutions, with particularly strong collaborations with the University of California, San Francisco, Stanford, UC Berkeley, federal and state agencies, and other leading national research institutions. The Division’s scientists are active members of the Health Care Systems Research Network, a network that links researchers and data from multiple Kaiser Permanente regions and other health care systems.
The Division of Research is located within the San Francisco Bay Area, a bustling, diverse, metropolitan area with ready access to San Francisco, the beautiful wine country, the innovative Silicon Valley, the dramatic Pacific Coast, Lake Tahoe, and the Sierra Nevada mountain range’s ski resorts and outdoor activities. The Division is in the East Bay and, in 2024, is moving to a beautiful, completely renovated facility with extensive collaborative workspaces.
